Masterclasses

Prefinal version of the courses timetable available here.

Prague Shakuhachi Festival offers a wide selection of masterclasses and beginner courses led by top musicians of various Japanese traditional instruments.
Since 2013, in order to assist our participants to experience new contexts and instruments, we included into our course selection an extraordinary course on one of the unique music instruments of world cultural heritage. IN 2013 we introduced the theremin of Pamelia Kurstin, and in 2014 we featured Dušan Holík, Slovakian master musician and instrument maker who makes and plays the Slovakian fujara, large overtone flute from Slovakian highlands.
We think that regardless of the student’s level the best way to learn is from a true master. This is why, not only the masterclasses, but also the so-called “hands on” courses for absolute beginners are led by top performers and the festival’s main guests.

For over eleven years, we have worked to improve our course structure. Every year, we try to optimise teaching periods, number of  pieces being taught and introduce our students to related musical topics and skills through workshops and lectures.

On afternoon Friday, August the 21st, the festival courses start with the introduction of teachers at the Music and Dance Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts (or HAMU for short).
This year we will approach sound and music in its most basic level. Hence Saturday, the 22nd, will feature a long soundwalk complemented by concerts and meditations that will be led by the zen priest Mumei Kosuge (few workshops or lessons will be held  that day). On Sunday, August the 23rd, the number of musical lessons will be high again and will continue all the way to the evening of the 25th when the festival ends with the students’ concert. All courses take place in luxurious and highly suitable facilities of Music and Dance Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts (HAMU). Every participant of any course offered by the PSF has a free entry to all the festival concerts and lectures.

Members of the PSF Friends program receive 30% discount on any masterclass they wish to take. Furthermore, they can invite one of their friends to take a “hands on” class for free.
